From my perspective
First meet
We first met online. I was looking to meet someone to practice Czech with and learn about Czech culture. My Czech teacher had told me to make a Czech friend so I could practice speaking otherwise my Czech wouldn’t get better. At that point in my life, I was so comfortable with where I was and I wasn’t looking for anything romantic. Daniel sent me a message asking me what I was doing in Hradec Kralove. I got annoyed because I had clearly stated on my profile that I was a student and I was looking for a Czech friend/teacher. I felt like he hadn’t read my profile if he was asking this question and I was about to block him. It wasn’t him per se, I was seriously just tired of people not reading my profile and asking me questions whose answers were on my profile. Our first in person meeting was at a cafe. Daniel brought pencils, paper, and notes ready to teach me Czech. We mostly spoke Czech in our first meeting and he helped correct my mistakes. We had such a nice time and I was really happy that I hadn’t blocked him. That afternoon, he texted me and asked if I wanted to go to Podebrady, I said yes.
When did we decide it was serious
I started getting the feeling that Daniel wanted to be more than friends but I was hesitant. I wanted to move back to Canada when I finished my studies and I couldn’t imagine asking someone to leave their home and everything they knew to come with me. I also had some other concerns but I prayed a lot and talked to my friends and family for advice. I don’t know when exactly it happened, but I just had a feeling that I wanted to give it a try. Daniel was, and is, such a great person and I felt so comfortable around him. Everything felt natural and I didn’t want to miss out... so one day, while studying for my exam, I wrote him a letter telling him how I felt and that I wanted to give us a chance...that I was scared but he was worth it and I didn’t want to miss out on a great relationship that I could have with him.
Proposal
I had no idea that Daniel was going to propose to me. We had talked about marriage a lot and we knew that we were ready to take that step together. I knew that Daniel received permission from my parents to propose but I thought he would do it in 2021. I wanted him to plan the proposal how he would like but I also knew how I wanted it to be. The main thing was that I wanted to look cute in case anyone took pictures and I wanted it to be at a place that was meaningful to us.
